In 2003 Department of Information Technology(DIT), Ministry of Communication and Information Technology(MCIT), Govt. of India provided funds to School of Education Technology to set up Multimodal Digital Distance Education project.

The project is mainly aimed at development of courseware in CD-ROM & Web formats by using multimedia, training of resource persons to develop IT Enabled course materials, setting up the network for dissemination in association with suitable partners and to evolve appropriate Courseware Engineering methodologies for making available quality courseware at reasonable cost and short time span and hence removing the major obstacle to distance education deployment.

As the outcome of the project, in January'05, School of Education Technology started Multimodal Digital Distance Education Programme in Jadavpur University with two courses MTechIT(Courseware Engineering) and PG Diploma in Multimedia and Web Technology. Both the courses been approved by Distance Education Council (DEC).
